Diablos Rojos played an exhibition game today against El Metro, which, as far as I can tell, is an amateur team from Mexico City’s subway system workers. Diablos eeked out a win, 7-6 on a walk-off. Here’s some more drawings. As with the others, I tried to do them as quick as possible, a couple of minutes each. A good reminder that I could really use some life drawing classes.
Some more drawings of the Diablos Rojos at this morning’s training session. This is just practice for me, really. Drawing people is something I need to practice a lot, and it’s fun and hard to do that when people don’t stand still for very long. Each of these sketches took 2-3 minutes max.
Some super quick drawings done at Foro Sol this morning, at the Diablos Rojos’ open-to-the-public training session.

Sometimes, better things than baseball happen at a baseball game.
I had a pretty boozy night last night, and didn’t get to bed until around 5.30 a.m. Today, the Diablos Rojos had a doubleheader beginning at noon. If you do the maths, the answer is “never in a million years am I going to arrive on time.”
And that was the case. I woke up, had coffee and some bread, put on last night’s clothes (mmmm, delightful) and traipsed to the subway.
I arrived at Foro Sol around 1.30 p.m., top of the 5th. Last regular season game, and it was pretty busy. I went to the section I usually sit in, and saw the beer vendor who I see every game. He was, like, “where the fuck were you?” He said it with a smile, shook my hand, put his arm around my shoulder and pointed to the ass of an attractive woman walking by.
I told him I had a hangover, I got a Coke from him, and took a seat.
A while later, he was bringing drinks to a family near me, and I asked him for another Coke. He came over, quizzical concerned look on his face, and ask why I didn’t want beer, did I feel bad? I told him I felt like shit.
He gestured and said “one minute” and hurried off to talk to a guy sitting a couple of sections over.
He came back holding this Canada Dry ginger ale bottle. It had about an inch of liquid in the bottom. “Drink it.”
It was tequila. And, damn it, if I didn’t feel better straight away. Maybe it was the tequila, maybe it was the fact that someone who is paid to work at the baseball stadium took the effort to do something so friendly and thoughtful.
I thanked him, and ordered a beer. He told me I didn’t need to thank him, “you’re my brother” and slapped me on the shoulder.
I saw something at a baseball game that you have never seen at a baseball game (unless you were also at this afternoon’s rained out Diablos Rojos game).
The Diablos Rojos’ batboy, who is a little person, taped to one of those things UPS/FedEx people use, and wheeled across the tarp to the top of the mound, and left there for more or less five minutes, before one of the players came out to take him back.
(Quick update note: I feel I should say that while there is humour in the concept of the prank they pulled, I’m not overly comfortable with the players picking on the little person. Do it to one of the better players on the team, then it’s really funny.)
I’m often posting stuff about Mexican League baseball, so figured that some of you may be interested to see what it’s like. Here’s a brief clip of Diablos second baseman Carlos Valencia reaching on an error by the Broncos shortstop.
I sat in the leftfield concrete very-hard-on-the-ass bleachers at today’s Diablos Rojos del México - Broncos de Reynosa game at Foro Sol. Outfield bleachers ticket price: 10 pesos. That’s about 74 of your United States of America cents. It was baking hot, and the few clouds that passed overhead were a great relief. And very beautiful on occasion.
Diablos first baseman Japhet Amador just moments away from grounding out to the short stop.
